Donetsk, Aug 28 – DAN. The square in front of the House of Government in
central Donetsk has been named after the late DPR Head Alexander Zakharchenko.
The decision to give the square a new name was announced by the
incumbent DPR Head Denis Pushilin. He reminded that in 2014 thousands of people
gathered at this square for a rally against the coup-d’etat in Kiev, and this
place had since become a symbol of resistance and fight for the Russian World.
Pushilin said that Zakharchenko had also become a symbol of the fight for
freedom and independence, the unity and people’s will.
“This is a truly legendary place,” Pushilin said at a ceremony at the
square today.
“This is the place where Donbass people made their will felt by
revealing a firm and solid disagreement with what was going on in Kiev – a coup
d’etat. Alexander Zakharchenko has become
a defender of people’s will,
commander of the first militia units, those guys who believed in our truth,” he
said.
A granite memorial has been erected at the Zakharchenko square, at the
façade of the House of Government, enumerating his achievements and the key
events of his life.
DPR Head Alexander Zakharchenko won the DPR Head election on November 2,
2014. Major General, he was injured several times during the war, and was
awarded the Golden Star of the Republic’s Hero and other awards. He died in an
explosion in central Donetsk on August 31, 2018. The 2nd department of the 5th
directorate for counterintelligence of the Ukrainian security service has been
identified as complicit in the murder.*ot

On August 28, a solemn event dedicated to the renaming of the square
located near Government House after Alexander Zakharchenko took place in
Donetsk. The event was attended by the Head of the DPR Denis Pushilin, Chairman
of the People’s Council Vladimir Bidyovka, People’s Council’s deputies,
representatives of ministries and departments.

ʺDear friends! We are standing on a square named after a Hero of the
Donetsk People’s Republic Alexander Zakharchenko. This place can be easily
called legendary. This is the place, where the people of Donbass expressed
their will. By his intransigent attitude, he showed disagreement with what
happened in Kiev that time. He disagreed with the coup, suppression of our
language, our culture and the imposition of others’ values, ideology and
policy.
Alexander Vladimirovich was a defender of people’s will. He was a commander of first militia groups, of those men, who believed our truth. The truth of Donbass. They were ready to defend and they did defend Donbass. Many of them did that at the expense of their lives.

Alas, our freedom comes at a high price. The war has already claimed
thousands and thousands of our compatriots. Many of our heroes are no longer
alive. And the first Head of the DPR, Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko, passed
away. This square will be one of the manifestations of our gratitude and
memory,ʺ Denis Pushilin said.
The Speaker of the Parliament Vladimir Bidyovka noted the importance of
perpetuation of the memory of the first Head of the DPR and why it was important
to tell our descendants about a glorious path he passed. ʺThe name of the first
Head of the DPR, Alexander Vladimirovich Zakharchenko, made it into the history
of the struggle of Donbass. The struggle for justice, independence and freedom
of our land.
Five years ago, in the days, when the Republic was under continuous
shelling carried out by Ukraine, it was him, who the people of Donbass
entrusted their lives to and chose him to be the Head of the DPR. It was with
him in charge, when our young state emerged in the most challenging times.
This square, where we are standing at the moment, plays a unique role in the Republic’s life and history. This is the place, where people gave up on fascist Ukraine, the place, where they opted for the Republic and Russia. The struggle for justice, equality, freedom, the struggle for people’s lives, to reverse historical injustices – this is what people stood here for and what Alexander Vladimirovich lived and died for.
It has almost been a year since he passed away. He was murdered suddenly
and vilely. But we have to remember about his purpose in life, about what he
did. The renaming of this square in honour of a Hero of the Donetsk People’s
Republic Alexander Zakharchenko will allow us to remember and tell our descendants
about him and his glorious path he passed,ʺ the Chairman of the People’s
Council noted.

The level of Mr. Zelensky’s cynicism and hypocrisy reached the
indicators of the previous President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. This was
stated by Deputy of the DPR’s People’s Council Vladislav Berdichevsky in an
interview to the Donetsk News Agency.
ʺZelensky compared Donbass and Crimea to children, who were taken away
from them. He said that Crimea had been stolen and Donbass had been locked in a
room and put under guard. I would like to ask him a question: Are we talking
about the same territories? If Ukraine loves Crimes and Donbass so much, then
why did it cut off electricity in Crimea and why does it keep methodically
destroying Donbass with shelling and economic blockade ʺ the deputy said.
Vladislav Berdichevsky noted that the policy of total ukrainianization
was one of the reasons why the conflict in the east of the country occurred.
ʺUkraine turned out to be a bad parent for its children. She could not
save what she had got after the collapse of the Soviet Union and preserve unity
in the state.
If we compare Crimea and Donbass to children, who were taken away, then
they are only comparable with those, who were removed from a dysfunctional
family, where parents did not care about them. Crimea and Donbass were not
forced to leave, they took a fully sovereign decision to live by their own
laws, when a coup took place in Ukraine. And now Kiev continues to do
everything to make our residents to enhance the willingness of following their
own path, which is different from what the Ukrainian government is trying to
