No discurso que fez à nação o primeiro-ministro de
Israel Benjamin Netanyahu reconheceu ontem que a guerra contra Gaza é uma
batalha pela existência do Estado Judeu. Netanyahu está certo. E Israel não
pode vencer essa batalha; não pode sequer definir que vitória poderia advir dessa
batalha.
Claro que a batalha não se trava pela posse dos tuneis
ou pela operação subterrânea da resistência: os tuneis são armas da
resistência, não são a resistência. Os militantes do Hamás e de Gaza atraíram
Israel para uma zona de batalha na qual Israel jamais vencerá; e o Hamas impôs
as condições, escolheu o campo e escreveu os termos que exige para concluir
esse ciclo de violência.
Por dez dias, Netanyahu fez tudo que pôde para evitar a operação por terra, pelo exército de Israel. Ele sabia que Israel não conhece resposta militar à resistência palestina. Netanyahu sabia que uma derrota em solo erradicaria o pouco que resta do poder de contenção que
Há cinco dias, Israel -- pelo menos aos olhos dos próprios apoiadores -- estaria no comando da situação. Via seus cidadãos convertidos em alvos de fogo infinito de foguetes, mas ainda mostrava alguma moderação, só matando palestinos civis bem de longe, o que ajudava a preservar uma fantasia de força, de poder. Tudo isso mudou rapidamente, a partir do início da operação em terra lançada por Israel.
Agora, mais uma vez, Israel está envolvida em colossais crimes de guerra, crimes contra a humanidade, crimes contra população civil. E, pelo menos estrategicamente, seus comandos de elite da infantaria estão sendo dizimados nas batalhas cara-a-cara em Gaza.
Apesar da clara superioridade tecnológica de Israel e do maior poder de fogo, os militantes palestinos estão derrotando Israel na guerra de solo. E já conseguiram levar a guerra para território israelense. E a chuva de foguetes sobre Telavive não dá sinais de arrefecer.
A derrota do exército de Israel em Gaza deixa sem qualquer esperança o Estado Judeu. A moral é simples. Se você insiste em viver em terra dos outros, a força militar é ingrediente essencial para impedir que os roubados lutem pelos próprios direitos.
O nível de baixas no exército israelense e as filas de soldados da elite israelense voltando para casa em caixões é mensagem muito clara para israelenses e palestinos: a superioridade militar de Israel é coisa do passado. Não há futuro para o Estado-Só-de-Judeus na Palestina. Se quiserem, que tentem noutro lugar.

In his speech to the nation Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged yesterday that the war on Gaza is a battle for the existence of the Jewish State. Netanyahu is correct. And Israel cannot win this battle; it cannot even define what a victory might entail. Surely the battle is not about the tunnels or the militants’ underground operation, the tunnels are just weapons of resistance rather than the resistance itself. The Hamas and Gaza militants lured Israel into a battle zone in which it could never succeed and Hamas set the conditions, chose the ground and has written the terms required to conclude this cycle of violence.
For ten days Netanyahu did all he could to prevent an IDF ground operation. He was facing the reality that Israel lacks a military answer to Palestinian resistance. Netanyahu knew that a defeat on the ground would eradicate the little that remains of IDF’s power of deterrence.
Five days ago, Israel, at least in the eyes of its supporters, held the upper ground. It saw it citizens subject to an endless barrage of rockets, yet it showed relative restraint, killing Palestinian civilians only from afar, which served to convey an imaginary image of strength. But that has changed rapidly since Israel launched its ground operation. Israel is now, once again, involved in colossal war crimes against a civilian population and worse, at least strategically, its elite infantry commandos are being eradicated in a face-to-face street battle in Gaza. In spite of clear Israeli technological superiority and firepower, the Palestinian militants are winning the battle on the ground and they have even managed to move the battle to Israeli territory. In addition, the barrage of rockets on Tel Aviv doesn’t seem to stop.
IDF’s defeat in Gaza leaves the Jewish State with no hope. The moral is simple. If you insist on living on someone else’s land, military might is an essential ingredient to discourage the dispossessed from acting to reclaim their rights. The level of IDF casualties and the number of bodies of Israeli elite soldiers returning home in coffins send a clear message to both Israelis and Palestinians. Israeli military superiority belongs to the past. There is no future for the Jews-only-State in Palestine; they may have to try somewhere else.
