Just as unfolded in 2014 during the so-called “Umbrella protests” or “Occupy Central” movement, a growing backlash has begun across Hong Kong against US-funded protests that have attempted to disrupt governance and commerce as part of a floundering movement to maintain Western influence in the region.

The Sydney Morning Herald in its article, “Triads linked to violent pro-China gangs as Hong Kong protests enter dangerous new phase,” ignored weeks of violence carried out by US-backed protests in Hong Kong, and portrayed locals retaliating as “violent pro-China gangs.” It should be pointed out that Hong Kong is in China.

With US Senate and House leaders from both parties pledging to advance the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, some radical activists demonstrated again on Sunday, calling on US Congress to pass the bill as soon as possible.

A small number of Hong Kong's most extreme demonstrators have gone into a fit of hysteria, announcing that should their demands not be met, they would rather destroy everything.

The main tenets of the bill include sanctions against officials who undermine Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy and a request for an annual justification for the special treatment afforded by Washington to Hong Kong.

The aim is to place pressure on Beijing and the HKSAR government. It is believed the city will face uncertainty once the law is passed, weakening conditions that support its status as

For some time now, the British government has been making irresponsible remarks about Hong Kong, claiming that under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, Britain still holds responsibility for Hong Kong. London has repeatedly accused China of violating the Sino-British Joint Declaration and the promise of "one country, two systems." The US and other Western countries have also lent their support to London. The recent G7 summit also quoted the Sino-British Joint Declaration and made groundless statements.

What contradicts the Sino-British Joint Declaration is what the UK is doing today. To put it more bluntly, it is the UK, not China, which is really in breach of the 1984  document.

As is known to all, Hong Kong was under British colonization for a long period. Before it returned to China, the two countries signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration Which was meant to manage the transition of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule, not to allow Britain to maintain its influence on Hong Kong after its return to China.
