Storyline

Hashtag of the online campaign, "Chinese national flag has 1.4 billion flag protectors", has been read over five billion times after it was published by the China Central Television (CCTV) on Weibo (China's Twitter-like social media platform) on August 4.

The campaign was launched following the actions of some rioters in Hong Kong that flung the Chinese national flag into the sea on Saturday night.

Millions of Chinese netizens have shown support for the campaign, expressing their pride for their country.

The figure "1.4 billion" comes from China's current population, which is around 1.4 billion.

As of Thursday, the hashtag has received over five billion views and more than 10 million reposts.

"I am greatly honored to be a member of 1.4 billion national flag protectors and do my best to safeguard its respect. We should resist firmly anyone who insults our national flag or any actions that violates national sovereignty," said Wang Yao, a college student.

"We have 1.4 billion national flag protectors in China. We cannot tolerate their insult against our national flag. I believe that they will be severely punished for their ignorance of law and recklessly violence," said Sun Haiyang, a lawyer.

Some well-known residents in Hong Kong also joined in the repost of campaign.

"The recent violence in Hong Kong has made us really heartbroken and worried. When I saw the post of CCTV, 'Five-starred red flag has 1.4 billion flag guards', I reposted immediately. As a Chinese, also a resident in Hong Kong, I just wanted to express my love for my country. It is the basics. The safety, stability and peace are like the air and only when you lose it, you know its preciousness," said Jackie Chan, a movie star in Hong Kong.

"Our national flag is in the red color which represents the sacrifice of patriots. It is quite meaningful. We don't allow anyone to insult it or even damaging it. The insult of national flag is not only hurting the whole country, but also all the Chinese," said Ha Ling, a college student.
