Donetsk, Sep 17 – DAN. The Ukrainian leadership has to start fulfilling the Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements instead of “reinventing the wheel,” the Donetsk People’s Republic Foreign Minister, DPR envoy to the Minsk talks Natalia Nikonorova told the Donetsk News Agency on Tuesday.

“Over the past few days, we have heard many resounding statements by Ukrainian authorities who show the wonders of ingenuity and cunning in the hope to avoid the implementation of the Minsk Agreements,” Nikonorova said. “However, no matter how much Kiev wants to change things, Ukraine had and still has quite definite and clearly stated Donbass settlement obligations, confirmed by the international community.”

Question: Can an improvement in the relations with the United States be expected in the near future?

Sergey Lavrov: An improvement will hardly materialise any time soon, since it is anything but easy to sort out the mess that our relations are in, which is not our fault. After all, bilateral relations require reciprocal efforts. We have to meet each other half way.

Russia is ready to move in this direction, as we have said on a number of occasions. We proceed from the premise that Russia and the United States bear special responsibility. We are the two largest nuclear powers, the founding members of the United Nations and permanent members of its Security Council. On 3 August 2016, we were invited by the Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) to attend, as foreign observers, to the roundtable conference demanding the UN and other international organisations to force Ukraine respecting the Minsk agreements, as indicated in the paper petition which gathered in one month (from 15 June to 15 July 2016) more than 153 800 signatures in LRP, and more than 500 000 for the two People's Republics (Donetsk and Lugansk) together.
